Ronald Broomfield was appointed Director of the Division of Adult Institutions at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in August 2023. A respected leader in correctional reform, he brought decades of experience to the role, including serving as Warden of San Quentin State Prison. Director Broomfield has been a key champion of the “California Model,” advancing trauma-informed care, evidence-based programming, and safer, more rehabilitative environments for both staff and incarcerated individuals. He played an instrumental role in guiding the transformation of San Quentin into a rehabilitation-focused institution and strengthening partnerships with innovative programs across the state. Throughout his tenure, he remained deeply engaged in visiting institutions statewide and supporting initiatives that elevate dignity, accountability, and meaningful change. He announced his retirement effective December 2024, concluding a distinguished career dedicated to advancing rehabilitation and systemic reform in California’s prison system.
